Why San Diego homes need steel

The topography here does not lend itself to simple framing. Homes step down canyons, cantilever over slopes and open entire walls toward the water. Wood alone cannot span those distances or resist the lateral loads a hillside seismic condition imposes, so steel moment frames, long span beams, transfer members and cantilever supports do the work.

Architects and custom builders in this county have been designing around that reality for decades, and we have been fabricating for them just as long.

Structural and architectural in one scope

Residential steel splits into two categories that often appear in the same house. Concealed structure carries the loads, including moment frames, beams, posts, hangers and connection hardware. Exposed steel becomes part of the design, including feature stairs, railings, mezzanine edges, canopies, fireplace surrounds and window and door framing.

Both come out of the same shop, which keeps coordination simple and keeps the appearance consistent where structure and architecture meet.

Working on residential sites

Custom home sites in San Diego County are frequently narrow, steep and surrounded by neighbors. Crane access may be limited to a single position, deliveries may need to be timed around a street too narrow for two trucks, and the work may sit next to a house someone is living in.

We plan those constraints before fabrication, including piece sizes that can actually reach their position, splice locations that permit assembly on site and delivery scheduling that respects the neighborhood.
