Del Mar Race Track

A racetrack a few hundred yards from the Pacific presents two problems at once. The season cannot move, and the salt air never stops.

About the project

Del Mar is one of the most recognizable venues in San Diego County, and its location directly on the coast makes material selection a structural decision rather than a preference. Chloride exposure at that proximity attacks carbon steel and its coatings continuously, and assemblies that would last decades inland need a different specification here.

The other governing constraint is the calendar. Racing seasons and event bookings define narrow windows in which work can occur, which puts real pressure on fabrication lead time, delivery sequencing and installation efficiency. Steel that arrives late does not simply push a milestone, it misses a window entirely.

Work at venues like this typically spans grandstand and structural framing, guest area guardrail and handrail, service platforms, equipment support, canopies and a substantial quantity of miscellaneous metals, much of it exposed to both weather and public view.

Conditions that shaped the work

  • Direct coastal salt exposure driving material and coating selection
  • Hard schedule windows defined by the racing and event calendar
  • Public facing steel requiring appearance as well as durability
  • Access coordination on an operating venue
